Daddy's Motorcycle Accident

Last night, we were having Aunt Jenn's birthday party at Great Granny and Great Gpa Roy's house. Justin was supposed to get done with work at 7pm and head to the party. At 7:13pm, he called me to let me know that he was on his way. (This is a motorcycle rule . . . I want to know when he leaves and when he arrives when he is riding). At 7:27pm, Justin called me again. This time, to tell me that he was in a wreck. I think my first response was "are you serious" since he tneds to joke (not usually about such serious matters). Anyway, he was serious and told me that he was pretty sure he had a broken collar bone and he needed to talk to the fire fighters that were the first to arrive after the wreck. He was driving South on Armour to Kellogg when a girl pulled out of the East Mall parking lot right in front of him. He slammed on the brakes, lost control, and wrecked. He landed on his left shoulder and rolled from there. He was wearing his helmet. The other driver did stop and said that she just didn't see him. When Justin called me back, I had already left the girls at Granny's house to head to the hospital. He told me that the EMT confirmed that his collar bone was broken and that they were taking him to the hospital by ambulance. I got to the ER waiting room at 8:00pm and they told me that he wasn't in the computer yet. The nurse was very nice and said that she would let me know as soon as she saw him come up on her screen. After 15 minutes, she called me back up because she still hadn't seen his name. She saw that a 26 year-old male was in the trauma bay so she called to see if it was him. It was him and I got a little stressed that he was in the trauma area since I hadn't been able to get a hold of him. She assured me that he was fine and that all MVC (motor vehicle crashes) go to the trauma bay to get completely checked over. She also told me that the chaplain would come get me when I could go back to see him. Just after talking to the front desk, Justin called me on a hospital phone to let me know that he was ok and that his phone wasn't getting any service. Then, I called Justin's mom to tell her about the whole situation (something that was extremely hard and stressful for me). At 8:30pm, while I was on the phone, the chaplain came to get me and I was able to go back to the trauma area (where is was extremely HOT) to see him. One of the first things he wanted me to do was to text Aunt Jenn and tell her, "Sorry I CRASHED your party". I was glad that he still felt like joking around. The ER nurse told me that all of his x-rays were fine except his fractured collar bone. They were planning to let him go home and scheduling surgery for Monday morning since his bone is broken into into 2 major pieces and one is over the other. However, they decided to admit him because he was having trouble sitting up without feeling like he was going to pass out. This was due to the overwhelming pain associated with sitting up and his arm pulling on his collar bone (even with pain medicine). Michelle got to the hospital while we were still in the trauma bay. He was finally moved up to a room around 10:30pm and they brought in a cot for me to sleep on. Michelle was still here and helped me set it up before she left. We didn't really go to sleep until around midnight and Justin had a very hard time sleeping. This morning, he still couldn't sit up without feeling faint. Justin was wanting to rest, so I went home to get a few things. After driving about half way there, I realized that I didn't have my house key or my garage door opener because I didn't have the diaper bag. So, I drove back to the hospital to get Justin's keys. While I was gone, the physical therapist came in and adjusted the sling to fit properly and then he could get up and even walk around (slowly) without a problem. His pain is now controlled while sitting or standing. MiMi and PaPa got to the hospital around noon and we spent some time visiting. Gma, Michelle, Kate, Jordyn and Tegan got here a little while later. MiMi & PaPa took Kate back to our house to have a nap and are bringing her back soon. Jordyn spent the day with us at the hospital. They decided to keep Justin overnight again since his surgery is scheduled for 7:30am tomorrow. Yesterday was a very stressful day and I'm glad it is over. Please keep Justin (and me) in your prayers tomorrow as he has his surgery. I will try to keep people updated here and on Facebook.

Krista, just saw this on FB and went to the blog. Please tell Justin we are praying for him (and all of you). So scary! I can't imagine how stressful yesterday was for you all. I'll keep a watch on FB for updates but wanted to let you know we are thinking about you. --Susan and Curtis

I am so glad that Justin wears his helmet! I was very happy to get the text saying that he was sorry he CRASHED the party - that let me know he must be doing pretty well even if he was hurting quite a bit. Getting that text let me know that his head must be just fine. Wrecks are so scary and I thought you did a great job of keeping things together and heading to the hospital! I love you all!
